The Cosmetology and Barber Examiners Board voted to approve DCI Academy of Cosmetology’s application to change its location and operate as a smaller apprenticeship-focused "micro school" in Memphis. Destiny Cox, representing the school, said the new site is "maybe about, 1.8 miles down the road" and described the micro model as holding fewer than five students per course with one to two students in the space at a time. The board approved the application with two minor changes and asked Cox to submit the edits to staff.
Board members asked the applicant to re-check the hours and math in the enrollment schedule and to add a disclosure noting that apprenticeship mentors or employers may require students to provide their own tools. "I will add that clause as well and then have the option if they wanted to purchase the kit," Cox said. The motion to approve the change of location was made and seconded on the record and carried by voice vote; staff will verify the two requested edits before finalization.
