COE highlights environmental literacy: gardens, outdoor school and green classroom projects

Amity Sandage, the county’s environmental literacy coordinator, updated the board on a suite of environmental programs that integrate curriculum, campus improvements and community partnerships. Sandage said 86% of county schools have gardens and that the county’s outdoor-school program reaches "over 90%" of students.
Sandage described the Green Classroom Challenge and a teacher leadership institute that produced nearly 97 teacher-led projects in the program’s first three years and engaged almost 2,000 students in the first year’s challenge. “In the first year of the Green Classroom Challenge, we had almost 2,000 students commit to those new actions in their schools,” Sandage said, and she invited trustees to upcoming celebrations and a teacher share fair on April 27.
She told the board the COE secured green business certification for its offices in 2023 and is reapplying for a gold-level Green Ribbon Schools recognition. Trustees praised classroom outcomes and discussed volunteer opportunities and event attendance; several trustees noted interest in attending the teacher showcase and youth summit described by Sandage.
