Board unanimously renews Career Advancement Charter School for five years, approves related MOU

The Santa Cruz County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve Resolution 25‑19, renewing the Career Advancement Charter (CAC) for five years after a decision hearing and committee review. Marsha Russell, the board's charter representative, told trustees the committee found CAC to be "middle performing" under current state metrics and identified no fiscal or accountability concerns, making the school eligible for a full five-year renewal.
Trustees also approved a memorandum of understanding that staff said is intended to clarify the legal and operational relationship between the county office and the dependent charter. Trustee Ben Allen said the MOU will prevent future ambiguities as the charter grows. Trustee 6 suggested adding a reference to the COE access policy to limit outside entities' access to school records; staff agreed and the motion to approve with that stipulation passed unanimously. The board directed staff to include the final MOU language and circulate the resolution for distribution.
