Janet Wagenuth, speaking for the Association of California County Boards of Education, urged the Santa Cruz County Board of Education to consider joining the association’s independent nonprofit after its transition from a CSBA section. Wagenuth described the organization as focused on county-board needs and said it delivers training, networking and an advocacy platform tailored for county trustees.
“We're an independent nonprofit led by county trustees focusing solely on the needs of county board members,” Wagenuth said, outlining services that she said differ from CSBA offerings. She told trustees the association currently covers roughly 55% of the state’s student population through member counties and asked the board to consider a resolution to join.
Trustees asked about revenue models and whether the new association would duplicate CSBA’s work. Wagenuth said the group is seeking grants and sponsorships in addition to dues and that it does not plan to compete with CSBA on conferences. She estimated the county’s fee for the year would be $2,700 based on current dues levels.
Trustees broadly welcomed the informational presentation but did not place a membership resolution on tonight’s agenda; President Sanchez and other board members encouraged bringing the topic back as a future action item so members could consider the fee and the scope of services.
