Board approves temporary vendor license for West Side ice cream sales at 1212 W. 9th; conditional approval for church site

Tina Mahone asked the board for a temporary street-vendor license to sell refrigerated ice cream at multiple West Side locations for one month, Thursday through Sunday. Mahone said she owned 1212 West 9th Street and supplied a certificate of insurance. “This is really kind of a proof of concept… by choosing Street Vendor I thought that gave you the option to sell at different locations,” she told the board.
Planning Director Dr. Edwards told the board that two of the proposed locations are zoned residential and that a use variance or other zoning steps would normally be required for commercial vending in those areas. Dr. Edwards recommended tabling or limiting approvals unless the applicant revised locations to appropriately zoned areas. Police Captain Jesse raised concerns about sidewalk obstruction and parking near intersections. After public comment both supporting and opposing the idea, the board approved a temporary license for 1212 West 9th Street and approved a contingent license for the church-adjacent site at 6th & Lamb pending written permission from New Hope Church; the applications for 9th & Willard and Gardenia & Jackson were denied.
