Barnes Park Family Recreation Center reopens; staff outline programming, construction timeline

Helen Hernandez, community service supervisor, told the commission the Barnes Park Family Recreation Center and the Barnes Bark Park held a grand reopening on July 18 and that daily programming has resumed. "We had an excellent time in our grand reopening this past July 18," Hernandez said, noting the park now hosts fitness classes, basketball courts and a busy playground. She said the park's lighting and parking have been improved and are being heavily used.
Commissioners asked about outstanding construction and event plans. Hernandez said minor construction remains and that the soccer field work is being handled by Public Works; she said staff expect a timeline in a few weeks. On community events at the park, Hernandez said staff are considering small, family-oriented events (for example, a Halloween costume-style dog day) but that larger or competitive dog shows are not planned immediately. She also noted staffing changes since reopening, saying two staff members remained from other locations and some summer staff had moved on to other positions or education.
