Board tables proposal to add middle-school softball after Title IX and scheduling concerns

The Abingdon-Avon CUSD 276 board on May 1 debated whether to add a middle-school girls softball program while maintaining opportunities for existing cross-country participants, then voted to table the proposal for further study.

Board members and parents described competing pressures: one member said the district currently loses about $40,000 in extracurricular activity costs, while a principal reported roughly 17 incoming 7th–8th grade girls who already play high-level softball. Several board members and commenters warned that, as proposed, the change would effectively remove girls cross-country and could require families and athletes to choose between sports. "We have actually received truancy letters because of this 0.5 day miss for an extracurricular activity," a parent said earlier in public comment, reflecting community sensitivity around policies affecting participation. (At the meeting a separate parent and student urged more flexible rules for homeschooled athletes.)

Board members discussed Title IX timing differences between middle-school and high-school seasons and the practical limits of student schedules. One board member said middle-school softball runs straight from summer into fall and often leaves little break before basketball and volleyball, and a principal noted cross-country enrollment has been low in recent years (at times as few as one or two girls). The board agreed to table items 12.1 (add middle-school softball) and 12.3 (cross-country changes) and to call a special meeting including athletic directors and coaches to gather schedules, transportation plans and options before voting. "Let's table this for now, and we'll maybe call a special meeting and have a little bit more discussion," the Chair said before the motion carried.
