Council liaison flags $1.5M mobility and parking transfer; sales tax trends unclear

City Council liaison Judith Chandler told the Match Board that the council had discussed midyear budget issues and that sales tax reports are two to three months in arrears, making it difficult to assert a trend. She warned that while members expect sales tax to pick up, there is not yet a clear recovery.
Chandler said council members were concerned that "$1,500,000 [was being taken] from the mobility and parking to, currently, budget our shortfall," noting recent actions such as temporary free parking promotions and the recent reopening of Hiawatha Gardens that affected parking and sales activity. She recommended board members monitor the Aug. 15 budget retreat and the council’s midyear budget materials posted online.
Board members agreed to revisit grant budgeting when more recent sales tax data are available and discussed holding a preparatory conversation before award decisions to avoid ad-hoc cuts similar to the prior year.
