Dolton wins $5M, $12M follow-on grant to begin lead service-line replacements

Dolton will begin replacing lead water service lines after the village received $5,000,000 for an initial phase and an additional $12,000,000 earmarked for work in 2027, the village engineer told the board on Aug. 3.
"The village was a recipient of $5,000,000 to start replacing the lead service lines," the village engineer said, describing outreach, potholing and hydro-excavation planned for streets between Indiana and Jackson and blocks from 140th Place to 144th. He said the 2027 funding will allow the project to expand into additional neighborhoods.
Trustees asked whether related grants exist to address broken fire hydrants and to clean and televise sewers damaged by recent storms. The engineer said Dolton applied for multiple DCEO grants and submitted paperwork for a roughly $250,000 sewer-improvement application following the storms.
The project will start with resident notifications and preliminary inspections; a formal construction schedule and individual resident notices were not specified in the meeting record. Community members in public comment pressed for faster clean-up of storm-damaged branches and whole trees that have sat at curbs for several weeks, concerns the engineer said public works is addressing as resources allow.
