School board approves multiple hires, lead-teacher stipends and coach appointments

At its Aug. 18 meeting, the West Branch-Rose City Area Schools Board of Education approved multiple personnel actions included in the consent agenda and a separate new-hire motion.
As part of the consent agenda the board approved new positions and stipends: Amy Buhlman (3rd-grade lead teacher, Surline Elementary) and Tara Farro (1st-grade lead teacher, Surline Elementary) each funded by the At Risk program with a $1,800 school-year stipend; Elizabeth Moore (2nd-grade lead teacher, Surline Elementary). The consent motion—moved by Trustee Alan Withers and Trustee Scott Kartes—carried unanimously, 6-0.
In a separate motion to approve new hires the board authorized the following appointments (motion carried unanimously, 6-0): Katelyn Elkins (Lunchroom/Playground, Surline Middle School, contingent on background check, $12.88/hr); Amy LaFave (8th-grade girls basketball coach, Surline Middle, EduStaff, 4%, Step 9); Drew Marentette (assistant varsity boys soccer coach, Ogemaw Heights High School, EduStaff, 4%, Step 8); Andrew Walker (ELA teacher, Surline Middle, BA, Step 1); Shelby White (Title I paraprofessional, Rose City School, contingent on background check, $14.21/hr); Brendon Zaske (JV boys soccer coach, OHHS, EduStaff, 6%, Step 1); and Paula Zilliox (special education paraprofessional, Surline Middle, $14.21/hr). The minutes note contingency on successful background checks for specified hires.
The minutes record motions in the standard form: "Withers/Kartes moved to approve new hires as listed below and as presented." The board did not record any dissent; all listed personnel items passed 6-0 in the public minutes.
