Select Board appoints two interim members ahead of August election

The Woodstock Select Board on May 28 appointed Gay Travers and Richard Sweeney to fill two interim select board seats through the Aug. 11 election.
Board member who moved the motion said the appointments were intended to keep the August contest objective and to bring experienced community members into the seat in the short term. "After careful consideration, we, or I move to appoint, Gay Travers and **** Sweeney, to the board, for, the term from today through the August 11th election," the member said at the meeting. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Several candidates had given five-minute interviews earlier in the meeting. Applicants highlighted experience in local boards and a commitment to transparency; at least two applicants said they would not run in August to avoid giving any appointee an advantage. The board said it encouraged applicants who were not appointed to run in the August election and pointed to petition forms available in the meeting room.
The appointments follow an extensive public comment period in which residents pressed the board on transparency and past actions. The board said it would provide administrative follow-up, including swearing-in details and next steps for the new members.
