School committee approves FY26 cleanup transfer to tuition line

The Wareham School Committee voted to approve a fiscal-year 2026 cleanup transfer that moves remaining line-item balances into the district tuition account.
Kristen Flynn explained the purpose: “The purpose of this is to transfer all of the remaining account lines with funds from the FY26 budget into the tuition line so that we can relieve some of the tuitions that we had charged to a grant.” She said the largest single remaining balance was $12,843 in the school-committee contract services line (legal expenses), and that other remaining balances ranged from small dollar amounts up to roughly $12,000. Flynn said the change will allow the district to charge certain tuitions to the town budget instead of the federal IDEA grant, preserving grant funds to cover tuition needs through the grant period, which runs through 09/30/2027.
Committee members also heard that the district has received notices of six additional out-of-district placements since the town meeting in April, a factor that increases pressure on tuition funding. Chair and members confirmed the transfers should be recorded with an effective date of 06/30 to appear in FY26 accounting. A committee member called the measure a “final cleanup” and members said it would not affect the FY27 LEA budget.
A motion to approve the transfer was made, seconded and approved by roll call (Roger: yes; Joyce: yes; Kevin: yes; Chair: yes), recorded as a 4-0-0 vote.
