Joyce Campana, representing the League of Women Voters for Lee County, urged the board to improve public access and engagement around the proposed county budget.
Campana requested that the proposed budget and supporting documents be made easier to access on the official county website rather than simply attached to the workshop agenda, and that the board either allow citizen participation at workshops or set aside dedicated time for public discussion of the budget. "Taxpayers who elected you and pay your salaries and benefits deserve transparency and the right to review the proposed budget in a timely manner starting with today's draft," she said.
Campana also asked that supporting documentation provided by constitutional officers be available for public review and comment so citizens can better understand how budgeting decisions were made. Commissioners acknowledged the request; the board's workshop was scheduled for later that day and the meeting adjourned until 1:30 p.m.
