Board selects center alignment for 23rd Street SW as part of Aliko connector phase
Summary
After staff analysis of three alignment alternatives for 23rd Street Southwest (north, center, south), the board adopted the alternatives analysis and selected the center alignment, which staff said minimizes private-property impacts while meeting long-range travel and safety needs.
County transportation staff presented an alternatives analysis for 23rd Street Southwest as part of phase 3 of the Aliko Connector project and recommended selecting the center alignment.
Rob Price summarized that three alignments — north, center and south — were rated on cost, environmental impacts, long-range planning and safety. "The center alignment scores better... by impacting private property the least," Price said; staff asked the board to adopt the analysis and specifically select an alignment. Commissioners asked about public input and heard that public comments about the alignment itself were minimal through the project's outreach.
Commissioner Petrovsky and others said they supported the center alignment for its lower private-property impacts. The board moved to adopt the report and select the center alignment; no objections were recorded and the motion carried.
Staff noted the project will replace the existing roundabout at Sunshine Boulevard with a conventional signal and add turn lanes on all approaches as part of work to meet 2045 travel demands.
