Commissioner Gale asked the Board to place a question on the next election ballot asking whether Elko County should elect commissioners by district instead of at-large. He argued district elections would make commissioners more directly accountable to district voters and allow districts to unseat incumbents who are unpopular locally.
Other commissioners countered that countywide elections encourage loyalty to countywide policy-making and cautioned the change would add election logistics. After extended discussion, Commissioner Gale "move[d] that we put it on the ballot," and a second was recorded; staff will follow up on ballot language and scheduling for a future vote on sending the question to voters.
