Daniels County asks DOT task force to reconsider bridge priority; officials warn of funding constraints

On a separate call with a Department of Transportation task force, agency representatives told commissioners that the county's request to swap its top bridge priority after the task force had already obligated funds creates allocation challenges. The DOT representative said the task force had largely allocated the available funds to the county's original top choice based on county rankings and OSB condition scores. "When you changed your mind and wanted to move your number 2 bridge into your number 1 category, that skews where you land with all of the other bridges and their top priorities," the agency official said.
Commissioners said they had re-evaluated bridge conditions after on-site visits and noted the flatcar bridge (02615/02617 references in discussion) was more heavily used and deteriorating faster, even though the score-based ranking differed. The chair acknowledged the county's decision may have been a mistake and asked DOT to advocate for the change if possible. DOT said it would evaluate options, that additional funds or reallocation might be necessary, and that it would report back mid-to-late December.
