A team of Kearney High School students presented a digital arboretum project to the Park & Tree Board on May 20, describing digitization of the park tree binder and publication on a public website.
One student presenter described the project's goals: "So for our client connection project, we did the digital arboretum," and explained the team compiled both common and scientific names, height/spread, bloom times, water needs and photos for park trees. The students created a website and mapped sections of the Jesse James trail; they reported documenting about 40 species and producing 68 slides. The student presenter said the site was published on a Weebly domain and estimated a $10-per-month budget for a custom domain to keep the site live.
Board members praised the work and discussed integrating the students' site into the city's Parks & Rec pages and transferring site ownership. Staff suggested setting up a contact/submissions form for community contributions and noted the project could be a useful public resource once integrated with the city website.
