Trustees weigh limits on directory information sharing with outside entities

During the board's first read of BP/AR 5125.1 on release of student directory information, trustees discussed the administrative regulation'level list of items that the district could release (examples include name, grade, awards, attendance, and in some CSBA templates, height/weight or major field of study). Several trustees expressed reluctance to provide sensitive items to outside entities and proposed limiting external sharing without parental consent.
Staff explained the policy (BP) defines the principle and the AR contains the operational list; parents will continue to have opt-out options. A trustee suggested language that would permit the district to use directory information for internal recognition (e.g., celebrating improved attendance) but prohibit sharing with outside organizations without prior parental consent. Trustees asked staff to return with a narrowed AR and proposed policy wording for second reading.
