Board approves response to civil grand jury report on Auburn Union finances and academics

District staff presented the civil grand jury report "Auburn Union School District tackling academic and financial challenges" (released July 1) and a draft response during the Aug. 13 meeting.
Staff said the district agreed with eight of nine findings and partially disagreed with the finding that beginning balances for multiyear budgets did not align with prior years; staff explained that budget figures are estimates that change when actuals are posted and that an arithmetic error in 23'24 was corrected in interim reports. The board accepted that explanation and marked that finding as a partial disagreement.
The grand jury issued five recommendations. Staff reported implementation for R3 (directing the district to pursue revenue from district assets following recommendations from the 7'11 committee), noting lease actions on Rock Creek and sales/investigation on other properties; R5 (pursue funding to expand transportation) has been acted upon with bus routes added to chronic absenteeism areas, and staff expect improved attendance to aid revenue. For the strategic-plan update (R1), staff set a target completion date of April 15, 2026.
After discussion the board voted to approve the drafted response and authorized staff to transmit it to the grand jury within the required timelines. Staff said some responses will have implementation dates in September or October as required by the grand jury.
