Stan Stirk, a resident at 16844 Landing Drive and a board member of his condo association, told the Ferrysburg City Council he wants the city to request a change order from MDOT to keep parking on the west side of Smiths Bridge. He said moving parking to the east side would disrupt mature trees and place parking closer to residences. "These are trees that I would say are probably approaching 100 to 150 years old," Stirk said.
Council members asked staff about the contract status. The presiding official said, "Last week, Thursday, I signed and City Clerk Shaner signed, the agreement with MDOT, and that was accepted," but added the state has not yet awarded the construction contract. Councilors said they intend to contact the eventual contractor and to make sure the project reflects the council's preference to retain parking on the existing west side; no formal motion amending the MDOT contract was recorded at the meeting.
