Superintendent Zack Sedgwick briefed the board on short- and long-term facility needs and recommended gathering options to address a districts-wide facilities analysis estimated at roughly $100 million.
Sedgwick detailed short-term projects planned for the coming months: Sandy Knoll Elementary roof replacement (~$400,000), outdoor learning/playground work at Cherry Creek and Sandy Knoll (grants supporting projects; MAPS share ~ $100,000), Shiras Planetarium renovations with a $1,000,000 project cost and an estimated MAPS contribution of $50,000, MAHS college & career and sidewalk/fascia work (~$430,000), MSHS & Sandy Knoll PA system (~$625,000) and MSHS Pod HVAC (~$175,000). He summed the short-term total at approximately $2.73 million and outlined long-term capital priorities across schools.
Trustees voted 7-0 to request that the superintendent collect information on paths forward to address the facility analysis. Trustee Eric Smith stressed the urgency of addressing deferred maintenance: "The consequences of not doing anything pose significant risk for the district." The board discussed funding sources including the General Fund, sinking fund receipts (about $1.3 million per year), grants and fundraising as components of a financing strategy.
Administration will return with options, timelines and cost scenarios for board consideration.
