Director Gerber outlines WASA's 'big three'—MSOC, special education and substitute costs

Gerber noted the state requires districts to provide a minimum of 10 days of sick leave but does not fund the substitute costs districts pay, which she described as pulling resources away from classrooms. "Districts absorb millions in substitute costs each year, pulling resources away from classrooms and student learning," she said.
The board discussed the priorities briefly and agreed to monitor the legislative session; no formal board action was taken on the legislative items during the meeting.
