Gunter accepts Texas SB12 grant to outfit officers with rifle-resistant armor

The Gunter City Council approved a resolution on Feb. 5 to accept a Texas SB12 grant to purchase rifle-resistant body armor for officers. Chief Jones (speaker 10) told the council the grant option, called Angel Armor, meets National Institute of Justice (NIJ) rifle-threat standards and would fully fund the equipment if the city fronts initial payment and obtains a tax exemption.
Chief Jones said the vendor quote showed about $32,000 for equipment for eight officers and that, once a tax exemption is applied, the price would likely drop to roughly $30,000. "As long as we front the money upfront, we will be fully 100% reimbursed for the city for that," Chief Jones said. The council moved and approved the resolution; the clerk recorded resolution number 2026-02-05-1.
Council members thanked emergency personnel for storm response earlier in the meeting before taking up the grant; no objections to pursuing the SB12 funding were recorded. Staff noted a minor ordinance text correction was needed in one spot before finalization, which staff said would be fixed.
