County manager: budget trimmed but insurance push raises contingency to $59,000

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the board at a May 6 budget public hearing that staff had pared many department requests but the draft still showed a roughly $21,830 deficit. "We have overall reduced the budget, to the part where we have a deficit of 21,830.00," Weaver said as he distributed updated budget handouts and reviewed capital-outlay items including vehicles and courthouse projects.
At the May 27 final public hearing Weaver said a later insurance renewal changed the math. "With the news of the insurance we are now at a 59,000.00 contingency," he said, and added that the county has changed brokers to seek lower rates. Commissioners were told that many equipment and vehicle needs would be funded from SPLOST rather than the general fund. The board plans to consider adoption at its next regular meeting after receiving updated insurance figures.
