Board votes to 'let for bids' after Freeport ends student-transport contract

The Dakota CUSD 201 Board of Education on Oct. 15 authorized administration to solicit bids for student transportation after Freeport notified the district it will not renew the current contract for the 2025–26 school year. Superintendent-elect Jenny Keffer told trustees the district will explore contracting with another provider, leasing vehicles, or purchasing buses.
"We were notified by Freeport that our contract for student transportation will not be renewed for next school year," Keffer said. On a motion by Mike Alexander, seconded by Shane Riggle, the board voted 7–0 to 'let for bids' for Dakota’s bussing contracts or leasing options. The board did not direct a preferred procurement approach; staff will return with bid specifications and recommendations after soliciting proposals.
