Council approves nearly $30,000 change order for Fire Station 1 remodel

City council approved a $29,771.37 contract modification for unforeseen work at Fire Station 1, increasing the Laser Construction contract to $297,715.81. Chief McDonald reported that demolition at Fire Station 1 uncovered unforeseen conditions requiring changes to scope: extended sprinkler work, reconfigured chase space to expand offices, enlarging an exterior door to 36 inches, and subfloor replacement to support new flooring. The additional, documented work totaled $29,771.37 and the council was asked to authorize a modification to the Laser Construction contract to complete the remodel as designed.
Council moved and approved the modification by voice vote. Chief McDonald said the changes were fully documented with permits and subcontractor costs and that 90% of the additional cost will be covered by fire impact fees and 10% by EMS levy/general fund. The council indicated support for moving ongoing facility project administration into public works engineering for future projects.
