Sunnyvale board honors trustee Nancy Newkirk after 29 years of service

The Sunnyvale School District governing board honored Trustee Nancy Newkirk on Monday, presenting a certificate and public tributes recognizing her 29 years of service to the district.

Bonnie, executive director of the Santa Clara County School Boards Association, presented the certificate and praised Newkirk’s leadership on early-learning initiatives and the county association’s legislative action committee. A representative from State Senator Aisha Wahab’s office and Patrick Aarons, representing Assemblymember Evan Low, read a resolution honoring Newkirk’s decades of community service. Angela Roberts, representing Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee, also offered congratulations.

Trustee Newkirk addressed the room and thanked colleagues and community members for their support. “I couldn’t have done this without you,” she said, adding that she would file a more formal farewell statement for the minutes. Board members and community speakers recalled Newkirk’s work on special education, early childhood programs, and district governance and mentorship.

The board recessed briefly for photo and cake, and the meeting moved on to regular agenda business. No formal board action was required for the recognition; it was ceremonial and recorded in the meeting minutes.
