Bothwell Middle School showcases Bay Cliff camp, honors teachers and rolls out 'Squabbles' SEL program

Principal Robert Reichel introduced co‑directors Courtney Beecher and Joe Levandoski, who outlined the 53rd annual Bay Cliff Science Camp schedule (May 19–23) and the camp’s mission to provide outdoor learning and a device‑free environment. Reichel also introduced two award‑winning teachers: Brenton Fitzpatrick, named Michigan History Teacher of the Year, and Adam Dompierre, recipient of the Michigan Reading Association Secondary Educator Award.
Reichel described the Squabbles Initiative as a conflict‑resolution and SEL (social‑emotional learning) program intended to reframe peer conflict as a learning opportunity. The program includes staff training, parent materials, 24 short student videos and weekly lesson themes. Trustee Jennifer Klipp praised the presentation: "I loved hearing about the culture all of you are building here; we all know that the junior high years are the hardest and bullying does happen, but you are not hearing about it. The fact that you are implementing the Squabbles Initiative and seeing change is exciting and really encouraging."
The board thanked staff and student representatives; student school board members Kaleb Chipelewski and Nate Wood were recognized for their service for 2024–25. The presentation concluded with questions and a brief Q&A; no board action was required.
