VAPA advisory committee urges revival of six-year arts plan and highlights Prop 28 spending

Janice Gower, co-chair of the district Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) District Advisory Committee, presented a lengthy report on July 15 summarizing accomplishments, gaps in arts instruction and recommendations for renewing a six-year arts strategic plan. Gower noted uneven access to discipline-specific arts instruction across grade levels, limited sequential visual-arts classes at some middle schools, and gaps in in-school theater and dance offerings at several sites.
Gower highlighted the introduction of Prop 28 funding this past year, saying the district allocated approximately "$1,100,000 in Prop 28 funds during this past school year" and that the requirement is to use 80% for certificated or classified staff and 20% for training, supplies and partnerships. She asked the board to support resurrecting a district arts strategic plan and listed community partnerships and student achievements across music, theater and visual arts programs.
