Sanford moves sandbag site to 18th Street; new Public Works complex will support storm staffing

Brent Johnson and other Public Works leaders said the city moved its primary sandbag staging location from Fulton Street to 18th Street to avoid traffic congestion at the prior dead-end site. "So we decided to not use the Fulton Street site as a sandbag location and decided to only use 18th Street," the director said, explaining the change improves traffic flow during high-demand events.
Officials also described a new Public Works complex under construction with separate administration and operations buildings; the complex will allow staff to remain on-site during storms and stage equipment and trucks for faster post-storm response. Staff said sand is stocked prior to a storm event (roughly 72 hours ahead) and residents must bag their own sand at the staging site.
