Commissioners authorize participation in remnant-defendants opioid settlement

The Board of Commissioners authorized the Board President to execute a participation agreement March 13 to join a proposed remnant-defendants settlement in the national opioid litigation. The six defendants named (Associated Pharmacies, J M Smith Corporation, Louisiana Wholesale Drug Company, Morris and Dickson Co., North Carolina Mutual Wholesale Drug Company, and United Natural Foods, Inc. and subsidiaries) would collectively pay $97,625,000 in cash as part of the proposed settlement.
Resolution No. 26-165 directs the Board President to execute the participation agreement electronically. The resolution states participation, if eligible under the settlement terms, would generate a one-time payment to the county to abate the opioid epidemic locally. Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the agreement.
County staff said DocuSign will be used to execute the agreement; no individual payment amounts for Lorain County were specified in the resolution text.
