CRA staff clarifies façade grant eligibility during Florida Shores moratorium; roughly $61,000 remains

During discussion on Jan. 13, a board member asked how much remained of the CRA façade grant budget for the fiscal year; staff said $100,000 was allocated and after commitments (including the items approved at the meeting) about $61,000 remained available.
Board members also sought clarity about the Florida Shores building permit moratorium. A board member asked whether businesses could paint and fix structures but not add impervious surfaces; staff explained the moratorium bars new impervious additions and is the legal premise for restricting rezones, annexations and site-plan approvals in the area. Staff noted that the US 1 commercial corridor was excluded from the moratorium and that owners of existing structures could still apply for façade grants. “So people could still apply and apply for facade grants,” staff said.
Board members asked that the public be informed about what is and is not permitted under the moratorium; staff and the board agreed to address the topic further at the Jan. 27 workshop.
