Student ambassadors from the district’s high schools used the Sept. 24 meeting to press the board on school climate and student life.
Tierra Pringle, the Student Member of the Board representing Saginaw United High School, told the board students seek "stricter rules on bullying and fighting," more lunch options and more school-spirit activities; she asked that seniors be allowed to decorate graduation caps to express individuality. Diya Ramankrishnan, SMOB representing Saginaw Arts and Science Academy, reported dietary concerns about lunches and said "there is a desire for more senior activities for students to build connections." She also noted new extracurricular opportunities: "more clubs are starting at the SASA, including Chemistry, STEM, and MIT Competitions, with the History Club coming soon."
Superintendent R. Roberts and board members thanked the student representatives for raising issues. Trustee Joyce Seals asked the superintendent to coordinate with food-service staff and convene a student focus group so student input can inform food policy and visibility. Board members said they value the SMOB perspective and plan follow-up through staff and committees.
The student remarks were recorded under the presentation section of the minutes; no formal board action was taken during the meeting on the specific student requests.
