Edgewater staff raises questions about city role in affordable housing

Ryan Solstice said the city has done successful partnerships on affordable housing (for example, with Habitat for Humanity) but has not established a dedicated municipal affordable-housing program.
"Is that something we need to do in the city? Is that something we need to explore?" Solstice asked, noting more active city involvement could require a dedicated department and additional taxpayer funding to administer programs. He suggested alternatives including density bonuses or continued partnership models if the public prefers less direct municipal involvement.
Solstice urged the public to consider how aggressive the city should be in promoting affordable housing because higher environmental protection and larger lot requirements can raise land prices and complicate supply. He said these tradeoffs will be part of upcoming workshops.
