County approves $104,072 courtroom audio‑visual upgrade

"We were awarded in Ellis County a $104,072.85," Smith said, and described plans to install larger monitors, cameras focused on speakers, and microphone upgrades so courtrooms can handle hybrid Zoom hearings and display digital evidence more effectively. He also said adapting the municipal courtroom for district‑court use will improve inmate handling and safety by allowing direct access from the jail.
Commissioner (functional label) moved to approve PO 8007; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners asked operational questions about how many courtrooms the district maintains and Smith said Ellis County will have four functional district courtrooms after the upgrades, with two jury‑capable rooms.
The purchase order covers the grant‑eligible equipment; Smith said the county will pay any small cost differences (for example, upgrading to larger screens) from capital funds and then seek reimbursement from the Office of Judicial Administration. The installation is intended to standardize equipment across district courtrooms and to support streaming and hybrid proceedings in the future.
