Residents urge stronger home-inspection rules, ask when Veterans Memorial Drive will be resurfaced

During public comment Daniel Pontonio said inspections for older houses should include full checks for hazards such as chimney damage; he described a recent home inspection that found about $30,000 in chimney repairs and urged the borough to require certificates of occupancy and fireplace inspections for older properties.
"When we went through this process, what we found out through the inspections is that this particular house had a chimney that had about $30,000 worth of damage," Pontonio said, urging the council to change local rules to protect buyers. The mayor asked Pontonio to provide contact information for follow-up.
Residents also asked when public works will resurface Veterans Memorial Drive; a resident, Bridal Healy, said repeated utility work has left the road in poor condition and asked the council to schedule repaving. Councilors said bids for a related grant-funded paving project are due Aug. 12 and that federal review and an inspector requirement will guide the timetable.
