Albert Lea board opens interim superintendent search; internal candidates given Dec. 27 deadline

The Albert Lea Area Schools board approved initiating a search for an interim superintendent at a special meeting on Dec. 23, 2024, at Brookside Education Center. The board voted to allow consideration of both internal and external candidates and set an internal application deadline of Dec. 27, 2024.
Director Angie Hoffman moved to open discussion on hiring an interim superintendent, and Bruce Olson seconded the motion. A roll-call vote on the search recorded five members in favor (Olson, Davy Villarreal, Kim Nelson, Gary Schindler, Neal Skaar), one opposed (Angie Hoffman) and one abstention (Dave Klatt); the clerk recorded the motion carried 5–1–1. The clerk earlier recorded approval of the meeting agenda by a separate motion from Olson/Hoffman that carried 7–0.
Board members described the timeline and scope: the search process is slated to begin in mid-January with an anticipated hire date in April, and interim contracts were described by the board as typically lasting about six months. Chair Kim Nelson said she would request a proposal and cost quote from the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) and would reach out to Barb Dorn for a formal proposal to conduct the search. Director Dave Klatt said he would abstain from the vote because of his position as Region One officer with MSBA.
No formal application had been received at the meeting; directors agreed to solicit a list of external candidates from MSBA and to allow internal candidates to indicate interest by the Dec. 27 deadline. The board did not adopt any final hire at the Dec. 23 meeting and instead authorized staff/leadership to begin the search process and solicit proposals.
