Survey of staff and community flags priority to protect salaries, special education and support services

The board reviewed key findings from a district budget-reduction survey conducted with the Monona Grove Education Association. The report, presented by Tanya, summarized areas the community and staff consider low-impact for reductions (administrative overhead, school supplies, materials, field trips and extracurriculars) and high-priority areas to preserve (teacher salaries/benefits, class-size policies, special education and student mental-health services).
Tanya and staff said survey responses also suggested opportunities for building-and-facility optimization, fee adjustments for materials and field trips, and reform of transportation costs as potential savings. The district noted the sample size (an item later in the meeting was described as drawing about 825 responses), and board members said the survey reinforced many of the steps the finance committee is already pursuing, including improved monthly budget reports and a five-year projection.
