Douglas County commissioners approved a parks funding agreement committing $7,500,000 to support construction of a Gold Crown Field House in Castle Rock after presentations from county staff, Goldcrown Foundation leaders and a town representative.
Steve Schultz, Douglas County director of parks and recreation, described the facility as a 75,000-square-foot field house with multiple courts, multipurpose rooms, STEM programming and enrichment camps. "The board's approval is requested in the amount of $7,500,000," Schultz said, describing the project as a three-way partnership among Douglas County, the town of Castle Rock and the Gold Crown Foundation.
Kevin Petty, president of the Goldcrown Foundation, outlined a phased plan on a 22-acre Dawson Trails site and gave a timeline targeting an April 27, 2027 groundbreaking and an early-2028 opening, subject to funding. Petty said the foundation expects to serve an additional 15,000 youth and about 600,000 annual visitors at full operation. He described the total project cost in his remarks as a $45,000,000 inclusive figure while earlier county material referenced a lower figure; Petty also outlined current funding commitments and a remaining funding gap the foundation said it expected to close.
A commissioner moved to approve the funding agreement and another seconded. Commissioners emphasized community demand for recreation, cited strong public support submitted in written comments, and approved the funding by voice vote. The board's action authorizes county staff to finalize the funding agreement with Goldcrown Foundation.
