The Farmington Board of Education voted 6–0 on Nov. 19 to appoint Dr. Kelly M. Coffin as the next superintendent and authorized the Superintendent Evaluation and Succession Planning Committee to begin contract negotiations. Trustee Claudia T. Heinrich moved the appointment and Trustee Angie F. Smith supported the motion. The roll call vote recorded Ayes: Heinrich, Smith, Weems, Blau, Fox, Turner; Nays: None.
The Board's superintendent search discussion incorporated results from a Cobalt Community Research survey and focus groups. Chair Terri A. Weems reported the survey received in excess of 700 responses, with approximately 250 respondents leaving detailed comments; the feedback favored stability and listed curriculum development, budget management, ethical leadership and communication among top candidate attributes. The Board discussed the options of appointing an internal candidate or proceeding with an external search before the motion to appoint was made. "It was moved by Heinrich and supported by Smith that the Board of Education appoint Dr. Kelly M. Coffin as the next superintendent of Farmington Public Schools and authorize the Superintendent Evaluation and Succession Planning committee to begin contract negotiations," appears in the meeting record.
