Edith Arias appointed to fill San Mateo County Board of Education vacancy in Trustee Area Three

Board President Hugo Torres announced the Board conducted interviews of two candidates for the Trustee Area Three vacancy and then took formal action to fill the seat. After a motion by Board Member Susan Alvaro and a second by Board Member Beverly Gerard, Edith Arias was appointed by unanimous vote of the Board (Alvaro, Bonini, Gerard, Love, O’Neill, and Torres).
Board President Hugo Torres had noted earlier that one candidate withdrew after the agenda was published, leaving two interviewees. The Board polled members for top choices before voting; a majority of the entire Board (four votes) was required to make the appointment, and the motion passed unanimously. The appointment conveys the duties and powers of a trustee immediately upon appointment, as Deputy County Attorney Lisa Cho confirmed during the meeting.
