Fire chief: Stage 2 restrictions and risks make a single fireworks site inadvisable

The fire chief (S3) told the council that statewide conditions have deteriorated and stressed the operational limits of a single supervised launch site. "As of 06/29/2026, the entire state is in stage 2 fire restrictions due to the increased dangerous wildfire conditions, fire activity throughout the state," the chief said, adding that the Great Basin area is at level 4 out of 5.

The chief explained what Stage 2 allows — devices with shutoff valves such as propane grills — and warned that asking all residents to gather and ignite fireworks in one park could create crowding, increased ignition sources, and additional cleanup or dumpster fires. "If you put everybody in 1 spot to launch them... Everyone's gonna smash in there," the chief said, arguing that concentrating users often worsens the hazard picture rather than mitigating it.
