After public comments, board removes preschool and childcare staff from provisional layoff list

The Sunol Glen Unified board voted to revise its provisional layoff resolution after teachers, staff and union representatives urged the board to protect preschool and child-care staffing. The superintendent had recommended provisional notices earlier in the meeting to protect district finances if enrollment did not firm up; the board amended the resolution to remove the preschool teacher (1.0 FTE) and childcare staff (1.25 FTE) from the list.
Union president and librarian Renee Stillwell told the board the provisional notices were making families and staff anxious and asked that preschool positions be removed from the resolution because the program has reached enrollment thresholds that make stability likely. "I'm school librarian and actually the president of our classified union here at Seminole College," Stillwell said during public comment. Trustees debated the risk of staff seeking other jobs versus the districts need to keep options open pending May registrations; after discussion the board approved the motion to remove the listed preschool and childcare positions from the provisional layoff resolution.
