Board appoints Evelyn Profeta to fill vacant seat after candidate interviews

After a series of candidate interviews the Sanibel School Board on Feb. 16 voted to appoint Evelyn Profeta to fill a vacant board seat, then administered the oath of office.
Candidates were given time-limited statements and scripted questions about district strengths, transportation needs and their availability for meetings. Applicants cited community volunteer work, advocacy for equity and experience supporting students. Public comment earlier in the meeting included an endorsement of a different applicant; Gita Golakota told the board she supported Scoopy Johnson's application and cited Johnson's community leadership.
During deliberations the board discussed representation of Title I school neighborhoods and long-term community service as key factors. A motion to appoint Evelyn Profeta was made and seconded. The board completed its vote and the superintendent, Dr. Gallagher, administered the oath. Profeta recited the oath, stating she would "support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the constitution of the state of California." The chair and members congratulated Profeta and noted a ceremonial photo and the next regular meeting on Feb. 27.
