Commissioners reviewed a draft land acknowledgement and voted to forward it to the city council for consideration.
Commissioner Sherry Green read the proposed text aloud: "We acknowledge that we gather on the unceded lands of the Wiyot peoples, including the neighboring Blue Lake Rancheria..." Commissioners praised the draft and discussed that any final version presented to the public would be subject to further amendment by the council or community members.
By motion, the commission approved forwarding the draft with commissioners volunteering to present it at a city council meeting later in the month. Staff and commissioners agreed that the land acknowledgement is a recommendation, not a final policy, and that the city council would have the ultimate authority to adopt or amend the text.
