The North Ridgeville Safety Committee on Aug. 3 heard a presentation on Ordinance 202669, a proposed change to Chapter 474 of the city's code covering bicycles, e-bikes and motorcycles, and then voted to table the item to allow police staff to rework the language.
Mayor Corcoran told the committee the goal was safety and alignment with state law: "we have, a lot of our current ordinances that are on our books mirror what the state has in the Ohio revised code sections," and the city wanted to "make this a little bit better and make it safer for all those involved." After discussion and public comment the police chief offered to separate bicycle, moped, motorcycle and e-bike rules into distinct sections to make requirements clearer for parents and enforcement officers.
Councilwoman Zingali moved to table the ordinance "until the next safety meeting, until he's got a chance to work on that legislation," and a committee member seconded the motion. The chair called for the ayes and the motion carried; the committee recorded the recommendation that the ordinance be tabled and returned to council later.
The committee set a schedule goal to have the legislation out of committee by Sept. 30; the mayor and staff emphasized prompt revision to avoid the item "dying in committee." The next procedural step is for the police chief to draft separate ordinance sections for committee review.
