Summary
Council authorized staff to negotiate and sign a host venue agreement with World Triathlon Corporation for an Ironman 70.3 event beginning August 2026, contingent on staff returning with a clear estimate of city costs; Choose Redding Lodging pledged ~$200,000 over three years to support the event.

Staff presented a proposed host-venue agreement that would commit the city to a three-year term with World Triathlon Corporation to host an Ironman 70.3 event in August 2026 and in subsequent years. The agreement would involve city support in personnel, security, facilities and permitting; staff proposed a partnership with Choose Redding Lodging to cover many private-service needs and said Choose Redding has committed more than $200,000 over the three-year span.
Council members emphasized the need to know the city's likely costs before final execution. A staff member said the WTC wants to market the event once the city signs the agreement but agreed to provide a cost estimate to the council prior to executing the host-venue agreement. Council then voted to authorize the city manager to negotiate and execute the host venue agreement while directing staff to bring back a clearer breakdown of city costs and potential budget impacts.
