County to apply debt-service savings toward medical examiner expansion; staff outlines timing

Pete Winton reported the county is retiring decades of general-fund debt and outlined a proposal to redirect that capacity. "We are paying that off this year, and what we're paying in principal... is 15,300,000," Winton said. He explained staff would take that $15.3 million tranche and apply it toward paying as the county proceeds on a medical examiner expansion project estimated at about $30,000,000, spreading the cost over two years.
Winton told commissioners staff expects to evaluate the sheriff's capital request in December when year-end reserves are known. Commissioners praised the debt payoff and staff stewardship, and no formal capital commitments were made at the workshop.
