Sheriff seeks $20 million increase, requests 30 positions and pay fixes; staff says funding limited

Pete Winton, the county staff presenter, summarized the sheriff’s supplemental requests and how staff arrived at the numbers. He said the sheriff’s office began budgeting at roughly $325,000,000, was ultimately approved at $327,000,000 last year, and is requesting $347,000,000 this year — about a $20,000,000 increase compared with the starting budget.
Winton detailed the sheriff’s priority packages: a priority 1 capital request (staff expects to revisit capital funding at year-end reserves), a priority 2 request for 30 positions estimated at $4,300,000, and a priority 3 package for compensation adjustments and compression issues estimated at $12,000,000. "For 2 and 3, we do not have the funding at this time," he said. Staff removed the sheriff’s capital ask from the immediate funding mix and estimated a small operating surplus after those adjustments.
