Superintendent outlines strategic-plan steps, SEL protocols and outreach efforts

Superintendent Adam Bowen used the Oct. 28 meeting to update the board on multiple strategic-plan initiatives and recent district activity.
Bowen reported parent-teacher conference attendance (Elementary 100%, Middle School 65%, High School not yet reported) and described programmatic efforts to support individualized learning, staff retention and student wellness. "Xello is a valuable tool that supports individualized learning paths, helping students explore careers that match their interests and goals," Bowen said. He also outlined new onboarding and mentoring steps — 30/60/90-day check-ins and a trimester "rounding" process — and noted the district will use BetterLesson for professional development.
On student supports, Bowen said middle and high school wellness teams are developing Tier I–III SEL protocols while the elementary school is updating PBIS across tiers. He added the district is forming the New Buffalo Community Education Foundation to expand community use of school facilities. Bowen closed by reminding attendees of the Nov. 5 election, which includes five school-board seats and a non-homestead operating millage renewal on the ballot.
